Spotlight: Parasomnias

While all sleep disorders have elements of risk if left untreated, some of the more terrifying problems with sleep fall into the category of parasomnias.

Parasomnias are sleep disorders in which abnormal things happen to people while they sleep that cannot be explained by more common disruptions caused by sleep apnea or restless legs.

Usually the behaviors of someone with a parasomnia are bizarre or compelling and can impact both the person undergoing an episode or their bed partners or nearby loved ones.

Unusual movements or strange emotional behavior associated with parasomnias can be anywhere from humorous and endearing to annoying and disruptive to violent, making these sleep disorders potentially dangerous and necessary to treat.

We've found a wide variety of links to information about parasomnias, including sleepwalking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, sexsomnia, REM sleep behavior disorder, nocturnal enuresis, night terrors, night eating syndrome, sleep eating disorder, and confusional arousals.
This week's links were published or updated between 3.6.16 and 10.30.16.

SPOTLIGHT: Sleep deprivation and sleep debt

SPOTLIGHT: SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND SLEEP DEBT

"Insufficient Sleep Is a Public Health Problem" was the headline just a little over a year ago from an article published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Have we overcome this major public health obstacle? Not really. Just a few months later, the CDC online newsroom shared this report: "1 in 3 adults don’t get enough sleep."

This week, we spotlight recent news about sleep deprivation and sleep debt (the accumulation of sleep deprivation that may never be reversed for some people).

Be aware that regular sleep loss and habits which prevent you from getting at least 7 hours of quality of sleep a night are going to have a long-term impact on your overall health and will increase your chances for having a fatal car accident, making major mistakes at work, or suffering from relationship problems.

This week's links were published or updated been 8.1.16 and 10.7.16.

WHAT'S HAPPENING: CPAP users... news you can use!

SPOTLIGHT: USING CPAP

While dental sleep medicine has emerged as a significant player in the field of sleep apnea treatment, there are still hundreds of thousands of people around the world using some form of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy to treat their sleep breathing disorders.

Check out these posts related to using PAP, especially CPAP (but including BiPAP, APAP, ASV, CPAP accessories, the big business of CPAP, legislation and insurance concerns, and more).

This week's links were published or updated between 8.1.16 and 8.31.16.
