WHAT'S HAPPENING: CPAP users... news you can use!

SPOTLIGHT: USING CPAP

While dental sleep medicine has emerged as a significant player in the field of sleep apnea treatment, there are still hundreds of thousands of people around the world using some form of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy to treat their sleep breathing disorders.

Check out these posts related to using PAP, especially CPAP (but including BiPAP, APAP, ASV, CPAP accessories, the big business of CPAP, legislation and insurance concerns, and more).

WHAT'S HAPPENING: Hypersomnia: When sleeping too much is not a good thing

SPOTLIGHT: WHEN WE SLEEP TOO MUCH
The media has done a fine job of pushing the critical message that we, as a culture, are sleep deprived. It's true: between untreated sleep disorders, insomnia, mental health concerns, and poor sleep hygiene, our record for getting adequate sleep, night after night, is dismal, on the whole.

But there is such a thing as sleeping too much. Not because of poor sleep hygiene, or emotional problems, but because of a distinct and legitimate category of sleep disorders known collectively as hypersomnia.

People with hypersomnia―idiopathic hypersomnia, narcolepsy with or without cataplexy, Kleine-Levin Syndrome (Sleeping Beauty Syndrome), and general hypersomnia caused by other factors―suffer from distinctively different levels of severity when it comes to their daytime sleepiness.

They are not "lucky" because they get more sleep, and they cannot simply drink a cup of coffee and walk it off. They also sometimes have trouble sleeping at night, just like the rest of us, making it that much harder for them to live full, healthy lives.

They suffer from chronic and often incurable problems whose symptoms and causes are biologically distinctive from the kind of somnolence we experience due to sleep deprivation.

This week's links were published or updated been 3.22.16 and 8.25.16.

WHAT'S HAPPENING: CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS

SPOTLIGHT: CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS

Why we sleep is determined by our need for rest, as determined by our sleep drive, as well as the way we are synchronized with the Earthly patterns of light and dark, rhythms which drive the life force of all living things. When our circadian rhythms fall out of sync, we pay a price for it. Learn about jet lag, early birds and night owls, circadian rhythm disorders, disorders related to shift working, and more.
